Rolling an edge

24 min 29 sec ago
What exactly does rolling an edge mean?
How will I know if I did it?
Is it repairable with a pasted strop, 16k stone, or does it need completely re-honed?

Hello all,

Greetings from Massachusetts.

I'm a newbie to SRP but I've heard good things about it and you. Just checking in. I've been DE shaving for about a year and I've just sent out my first straight (H. Boker from an antique shop) to be honed. I'm also awaiting delivery of a strop.

I appreciate the chance to have a place like this with knowledgeable and experienced folks.

Thanks.

Fancy Washers

1 hour 12 min ago
I really hate to ask you guys this but I need some fancy washers and my man Babur from Germany has sort of disappeared. I've been using the Microfastener screws tightened with small nut then fitting a nicer washer over the nut and peeing the screw. It works out great!! But I am out of nice washers and need a source. I would really appreciate a PM from a kind soul. Or if someone wants to sell me some, that works too. I tried making some but you need the right equipment to really do it well.
Thanks!!!!

What did grampa do ??

1 hour 32 min ago
So I've asked about strops, nicks waterspots etc. and have gotten good feedback. But I am curious if anyone truly knows. In the days of our grandfathers and their fathers, how did they remove waterspots, store and care their blades, treat their strops etc.I'm sure we have come far with modern products, but are there any tried and true old time techniques that we have forgotten or just don't use due to modern tech ? I'm asking this beyond what we've read in old barbers manuals.I'm asking what did joe average back in the day do not barbers ? When gramps for example was in the trenches during the great war,how did he care and store his blade? That would be a good start eh ? It's not like you could buy a cedar box at the store readily . And how did he keep his strop in good shape out there. What were common kits back then for joe average not the rich guy who could afford nice things.I'm talking field care for carbon steel which could go south with rust any sec. Let's see what we get here ? And this info can go back as far as anyone can dig, i.e War for independence,Civil war, sailors at sea where sea air is all around you,and it doesn't even have to be wartime ,what did joe average victorian guy do as well or the cowboy in the middle of nowhere What would Julia childs do ? No wait, different subject, although she would probably add a little oregano and simmer.....Ok guys let'er rip......??? :hmmm::thinking:

Making my first brush

1 hour 37 min ago
I just received a couple of really nice knots from one of our vendors and want to turn my own handles. I would rather drill the hole than turn it. I have a 22mm and 24mm knot. My forstner bits are in standard imperial sizes. On paper, a 22 should be slightly smaller than a 7/8" hole and a 24 should be smaller than a 1 inch bit hole.

My math tells me the 24mm knot will have a little more room in the 1" hole, so, how much epoxy can one expect to shim the excess space? Can one wrap the knot in masking tape and expect the epoxy to keep the tape from deteriorating over the long haul?

I think I read that a hole a little large is fine, as the epoxy will not squirt out making a mess. The short question is how tight should the knot fit?

Japan Tool

Greetings,

So has had a message on his site saying that Japan Tool is temporarily closed while he gets caught up. He has not returned e-mail. Anyone know when he may be open for business again?

Thanks,

Stropping the Night Before

2 hours 4 min ago
I think I have read that some people here strop the night before they shave.

Does this have any affect on the strop quality or is there no difference over 8 hours or so?

I am going to strop a razor tonight and one tomorrow morning. In order to compare, I am going to use a Boker 101 Red Injun and my Boker Diamond. Not an exact match, but close.

I will do this again the following day using my Dovo Bismark and my Dovo Special. Again, not an exact match, but close.

One on one side of my face, one on the other. I will post results.

Aluminium spacer wedge

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 23:58
I read a post yesterday where a member used Aluminium as a spacer wedge on a razor and it got me thinking. I have some pieces of 3mm thick Al here that would be perfect. Its probably safer than lead and easier to get my hands on than NiAg and would look nice on this W&B I'm working on.
Any of you guys tried it, any pros/cons I dont know about?

Slurry on Thuri

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 23:47
I recently got my hands on this old thuri http://www.straightrazorplace.com/fo...tar-brand.html Its a nice little 6"x1" and it seems to give a very nice finish (I've onlt tried it once so far).
I've read a lot of guys recomend using slurries with this type of stone and would like to try it out. I dont have a slurry stone for it and my concern is that if I get a small dmt 325 I might scratch up the surface or just wear through the hone in a couple of years. It seems very soft, there were a chunk out of the bottom of the stone that I wanted to smooth out and I was amazed how easy it was to reshape the material.
Am I being paranoid or can anyone recomend an alternative, I have no experience with these hones.

Can anyone tell me anything about this aftershave? If you like it? Where to buy and such??

What type of blade are they?

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 22:29
I was curious on what the blades are called that have no scales or anything... They look almost like a fixed blade knife...

I have seen some in the SOTD posts and such and really like them and also would like to look into purchasing one.

Two hones, what are they?

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 22:21
Here are photos of a couple of hones that came my way about which I know nothing. The first stone is a grey-green on one side and a maroon on the other. It has an uneven separation between the two.Attachment 48445
The other is a Glass Hone which appears to be a sandblasted glass surface.
Attachment 48446
Does anyone have an idea about what the top stone is and how to use the glass stone?
Thank you!

The Feather 'no sharpen' Straight Razor...

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 21:49
Seems like the Feather no sharpen straight razor ''might'' be a good place for a newby like myself to start with.

What say you all?

and you thought we'd exhaused brush topics

Gents,
I use talc or gold bond around my neck to keep my shirt collars nice. I have traditionally put it in my hand and slapped it on but this of course makes it go everywhere and sometimes gloops it on.

So I have my first badger bruch and while I don't use it much except for traveling I don't want to mess it up either. Does anyone know if I put the talc/gold bond on there and use it for that if it will screw it up?

Cool!..future of screen technology

Weird stains on blades after honing

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 19:38
First, let me say thanks again to everyone who helped me with the "honing with tape" technique. I am now getting killer sharp edges with electrical tape, consistently and without drama. Thanks!!

Now here's the next problem. I've noticed this a few times, both with tape and without. After I'm done honing and I start to dry the blade off before stropping, I notice that there is a dark water stain across the bottom third of both sides of the blade, right where the water from the hone and slurry was in contact with the blade. There's never any staining above this level, and the stain always comes off with a little Flitz, but what the heck is going on?! I end up keeping my can of Flitz handy whenever I need to hone, which is kind of ridiculous. And this isn't a stain that comes from just making contact with water, because these blades get wet all the time when I shave with them! So what gives?

Anyway, what I'm using now is this -- Naniwa 1k, then one of my BBW/coti combo stones (both sides), then either a CF or Japanese stone to finish. Thanks for the help with this! --Jeff

Second Shave

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 19:18
Did okay on the left side, but got a couple of dings on the right side. Still working on the grips and angles. Gotta keep focused on the angle or else the blade kinda skips across the shaved area and oops, a claret fluid begins to seep! I'm far from being discouraged and will persevere. Resistance is futile!

QUESTION: Size wise, what is the perfect shape and size hone?

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 18:16
I am interested in what is considered to be the perfect size razor hone. For myself, I hone on the table top with a 8x3x1.5 inches thick, but understand that many users hone on a palm size hand held stone. Any thoughts? Alx

This is ace!

Buying horn

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 17:56
Where do you guy's buy horn. I'm restoring two frame backs, both have horn scales with pewter wedges. I can reuse the wedges but need to replace the scales. Where can I buy horn in at least 6" lengths, x 1/8th" thick? Thank you all.
